MG ZS

The MG ZS is a compact crossover for anyone who wants "a Yaris Cross, but cheaper." A high seating position, good visibility and extra ground clearance mean you feel calmer than in a sedan on the island's patchy roads. Inside, the kit is surprisingly rich: a big screen with CarPlay/Android Auto, climate control, parking sensors, a camera. The boot swallows the suitcases of a family of four. It's quiet on the move, and while the 1.5 engine is no sprinter, it has enough in reserve for the city and the highway. A solid choice for a couple or family on 7–14 days who'd rather not pay extra for the badge.

The high stance isn't just about crossover kudos — it's genuinely useful on Phuket. In the rainy season, when Patong's junctions go under water and a packed dirt track leads to far beaches like Nai Thon, the ZS's clearance brings a peace of mind a sedan can't. There's no all-wheel drive, so don't tackle mud or serious off-road, but for 95% of an average tourist's routes there's plenty of geometry in hand.

The price relative to the kit is a particular pleasure — for the money of a compact budget car you get a crossover with a big touchscreen, camera and parking sensors, which makes life much easier in the tight lots of the old town. Downsides: the naturally aspirated 1.5 is short on urgency, a loaded ZS ambles uphill, and fuel use sits around 7 litres — not record-setting, but acceptable. A typical scenario: a couple or family with a child takes the car for a couple of weeks, tours the beaches, heads down a dirt road to quiet coves, and wants a versatile crossover without paying for a big name.
