Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid

The Yaris Cross is basically "the Yaris that got tired of being tiny." Same economical hybrid, but with a higher seating position, more ground clearance and crossover looks. It drives like a family car: quiet, smooth, no surprises. City fuel use is comically low — the hybrid earns its keep in traffic. The higher stance comes in handy in the rainy season, when roads flood in places, or on a dirt turn-off to a lesser-known beach. Inside it's thoroughly modern: a decent screen with phone support, climate control, a 360° camera. It suits a couple or a family with one child who want a bit more space than an ordinary sedan offers. People rent it for 7–14 days for family trips around Phuket and jaunts to neighbouring provinces.

The car's headline trick is pairing hybrid economy with a crossover's seating height. In city driving, where an ordinary petrol engine drinks the most, here the motor keeps shutting off and you run on electric power, so real-world consumption stays around 4–5 litres per 100 km. Over a holiday that's a tangible saving, and getting in and out of the raised seat is far more comfortable for anyone tired of dropping down into a low sedan — especially with a child or elderly parents.

The ground clearance is genuinely higher than a sedan's, but don't be fooled — this is a city crossover without all-wheel drive, so serious off-roading isn't for it. A packed dirt track to a beach like Banana Beach, a hotel kerb, or a puddle left by a downpour, though, won't faze it. The surround-view camera makes parking in tight courtyards and packed lots near Central Festival much easier. A typical rental: a couple or small family takes the car for a week or two, tours the island daily, heads out to the far beaches down a dirt road once or twice, and wants an all-rounder that's equally happy in traffic and on the approach to a wild shore.
