MG 5

The MG 5 shows just how far recent Chinese sedans have caught up with the Japanese on comfort. A big screen, digital instruments, climate control, decent sound insulation — everything that counts as an option in a Civic comes as standard here. It drives smoothly, not "wooden," fuel use is middling, and the engine is responsive. Inside it's unexpectedly spacious: two adults sit in the back without complaint. There are downsides too: the plastics are simpler in places than Toyota's, and a repair, if needed, might take a couple of days. But for the money, the MG 5 is one of the most sensible choices for a longer rental. One of the most popular rentals on Phuket for value and comfort.

On price it goes head to head with the Yaris and Honda City, but for the same money you get a car a class larger and noticeably better equipped. The big multimedia tablet with CarPlay and Android Auto takes the fuss out of maps — the route to Krabi or a far beach goes straight to the screen and you just drive. The boot is large, and for a couple or small family on two weeks the suitcases and beach gear fit without trouble.

Honestly about its character: the 1.5 is naturally aspirated, acceleration is adequate for city and highway but not sporty — for a long overtake with the car loaded, leave yourself distance. Fuel use is around 6–7 litres of petrol per 100 km, nothing remarkable but not costly either. The clearance is sedan-height, so dirt tracks and rain-flooded roads aren't for it. The typical renter takes the MG 5 for a long stint purely on rational grounds: they want a roomy, comfortable, well-equipped car but have no wish to pay a premium for a Japanese badge — and in that niche the MG hits the target dead-on.
