MG HS

The MG HS is a 2023 turbocharged crossover from the British-Chinese brand MG, already familiar on the island through the MG 5 and MG ZS in our fleet. The HS is the largest and most upmarket model in the lineup — longer, taller and more substantial on the road than its smaller siblings. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with an automatic gearbox gives brisk acceleration and a confident reserve of power for overtaking, with torque available low in the rev range. Standard equipment includes a large touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, a rear-view camera, parking sensors and a modern digital instrument cluster. Renting an MG HS on Phuket suits a family that wants an above-average crossover for reasonable money, ideally for a week or longer.

What really separates the MG HS from the brand's smaller models, the MG 5 and MG ZS, is the turbocharging and a noticeably more grown-up feel. Where the ZS and MG 5 drive like compact city cars, the HS feels like a full-size family crossover: the turbo engine pulls evenly across the rev range, and sound insulation and ride comfort on the highway are a clear step up. For long drives across the island — from the airport down to Rawai or up to Bang Tao — it feels like a more comfortable, more substantial car.

The MG HS cabin is roomy across all rows, with rear seats that fit adults without compromise, and a boot that swallows a family of four's luggage without any packing gymnastics. The downsides are its larger footprint, which makes parking trickier in the tight lanes of Patong or Chalong, and fuel consumption that runs higher than naturally aspirated rivals. The typical renter is a family with children or a group of friends staying 10–14 days who value space, modern equipment and a bit of extra power reserve for a fully loaded car.
